RWANDA AT A GLANCE
Rwanda has a number of unique delights to offer to tourists. The extraordinary National Parks and reserves of Rwanda need np introduction, but the south of Kigali, visitors can wind through beautiful, terraced hillside farmland to Butare, Rwanda’s intellectual centre and home of the National Museum. This monument to Rwandan history features expertly annotated exhibits including a completely furnished chief’s house and many long ago photographs. Visit the different genocide memorial sites in Rwanda; Gisozi being the biggest is well presented and located in the Kigali city centre where many genocide victims killed in Kigali and on its outskirts are buried. The crafts Village known as Kaplaki is well worth a visit for its wide variety of arts and crafts.
Parc National des Volcans in the Virunga volcanoes is home to the mountain gorillas to which Dian Fossey dedicated her life. Nyungwe Forest, one of the largest montane forests in Central Africa, is renowned for its large troops of colobus monkeys and rich variety of orchids. Akagera National Park is a savannah park with elephants, hippo and crocodile. Lake Kivu is a beautiful inland sea enclosed by steep terraced hillsides. There are a large variety of birds. Rwanda has a rich culture with its second city, Butare, having one of the finest cultural museums in Africa.
What to Bring
Depending on the time of year and whether you are going to the south and or northern part of the country that is to say Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Parks, you will need moderately warm clothings for nights. On safari, you are advised to wear trousers and stout, hiking boots, short and long sleeve blouses, lace-up shoes, and clothing should be in natural, earthy or khaki tones. Remember to take a hat, sunglasses and sun block, a torch, insect repellent, binoculars and plenty of camera film.
Safety and Security
Rwanda is the safest country in African continent however, we advise our clients to note the following cautions; in public do not carry large sums of money or a handbag. Use the hotel safe for all your valuables, cameras and passports. Do not respond to proposals made in the street. As a general rule take a taxi, particularly after dark. On safari take the advice of your guides, hosts and lodge management.
